Owl Coffee Cup Cozie pattern

materials:
- aran, dk or worsted yarn (18-20sts =4"),  13 grams
- dpn's (right size for yarn & tension) set of 4
- 10 sew-on eyes, 8mm-10mm
- cable needle, darning needle (to sew on eyes) and crochet hook (to weave in ends)
- optional: scrap yarn in a contrasting colour to sew on a beak

Finished size: mine ended up being 4" tall, and fits a large cup of take out coffee (approx 8-9" in diameter)

Terms used in this pattern:
C4F: put 2 sts on a cable needle, hold in front, k2, then k2 from cable needle
C4B: put 2 sts on a cable needle, hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle
C2F: put 1 st on a cable needle, hold in front, k1, then k1 from cable needle
C2B: put 1 st on a cable needle, hold in back, k1, then k1 from cable needle
K_tbl: Knit the stitch thru the back loop; in this case, knit two stitches each thru the back loop

how-to:
Cast on 48 sts. Divide between 3 dpn's, and join.
K2tbl, P2 rib for 4 rows.
Next row (5th row): continue doing k2tbl, p2 rib while increasing 2 stitches evenly around. 50 sts.

Work Owl Cable: (there are 5 owls around)
Rows 1 & 2: *k8, p2* around to end.
Row 3: *C4B, C4F, p2* around.
Rows 4-9: *k8, p2* around to end.
Row 10: *C4B, C4F, p2* around.
Rows 11-15: *k8, p2* around to end.
Row 16: *C4B, C4F, p2* around.
Row 17: *k8, p2* around to end. Or, to make pointy ears: *C2B, k4, C2F, p2* around to end.

Next row: work k2tbl, p2 rib while decreasing 2 sts evenly around. (48 sts)
Work 4 rows of k2tbl, p2 rib.
Cast off loosely, weave in ends.

To finish: Sew on 2 eyes per owl, just under the third cable that was worked in row 16. Add a beak using duplicate stitch - a tuturial I like can be found here.

  5. I Just love this pattern and would like very much to print it off. May I print it off (which includes the picture..I do love having the pic to refer to!)? It is for my own personal use. If not, how else may I get a copy of the pattern without having to hand write it?

  6. Annie - of course you can print it. Printing free patterns doesn't violate any copyrights... using the pattern for other than personal use does. Print away :) and happy knitting to you!

  9. Could you revise this into a handwarmer pattern? I don't have enough knitting expertise to do it. It would be a cute set.

  10. i can't seem to get past row 3 "*C4B, C4F, p3* around." the math doesn't seem to work. 55 stitches total, with a 7 stitch repeat? it doesn't end on p3. help?

    ReplyDelete
  11. kareno - it's an 11 stitch repeat: C4B is 4 sts, C4F is 4 stitches, and p3 is 3 stitches, making 11. :)

    1. Well it is actually showing C4B and C4F; that is 8 STS. And only p2 in between each owl.

  21. Hi...need a little help please. New knitter and have gone OCD with owls...LOL!! My need is this, can you please tell me what needle size you used to knit this cute owl cozy? I am NO GOOD at figuring out what needle size I need (still must depend on pattern to tell me) thanks so much.. now to make a reminder to check back for answer..thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  22. KrestieKrew - it'll depend on what kind of yarn you're using. Your yarn label should recommend a needle size, alternatively do a swatch. Tension should be around 20sts = 4". Patons Classic Wool, for example, needs a 4.5mm needle; Elann Peruvian Highland Wool needed a 4mm needle. It really depends on the yarn. I've purposely left the yarn choice and needle choice open, but I did give tension for this project.

  23. ok...as I said, new at all this so will have to get someone to help me figure it out... LOL!! do fine if the pattern has exactly needle size and which yarn..that is why I wondered what yarn and needle you used when you made it...;-D

    ReplyDelete
  24. KrestieKrew - personally, I've so far made this pattern using Elann Peruvian Highland Wool and Paton's
Classic Wool, and both cases used a 4mm needle. If you check on Ravelry, in the project pages, you can see what other yarns others have used & their needle sizes, to get ideas. :D Hope this helps!

  25. ;-D thanks... you have given me somewhere to start and will look at Ravelry

  26. Hi Im new to knitting has any one got this pattern for straight needles? or can suggest how to alter the pattern above?
    Thanks tam

  27. I seem to do fine until I get to the increase row. What do you mean by add 2 "evenly"? I've been KFB at the 1st and 24th stitch, but then when I go to the next two rows, they don't line up. Help!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, I got it! Did and invisible increase on both sides, counted more carefully -- voila!

  29. My friend just made one of these for me - is it okay if I post pics to my blog and link back to the pattern here?

  30. I tried this pattern for my first project knitting in the round with DPN! It turned out great and took me only a few hours! I was wondering if you know how to do the owl pattern by knitting with regular knitting needles not in the round?

  32. I decided not to add the googly eyes (it's close to Christmas and I've got to get them done quick!). So, on row 15, I changed it from k8 to k2, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2. This created little holes for eyes. What a cute pattern! Only 6 more to make in the next 10 days!!

  33. I have a friend who is in Chi-O. Owls are their symbol and this is a perfect birthday gift!
It only took a few hours to knit over 2 days.

Thank you so much for this great pattern.

  34. My granddaughter will love this pattern. She is really into Owls now. Can I print the pattern out without your black background to save my ink? Again thanks for the pattern. Merilyn

    ReplyDelete
  35. Meriyn - the black background won't print, just the text, so no worries. :)

  39. I love the pattern but I'm having trouble beginning the owl pattern. It doesn't look like anything in the photo, the body is out of place. Can someone please help me because I can't seem to get pass the k2tbl, p2 ribbing. When I start row4-9, the pattern look very much like a garter stitch. 😕

    ReplyDelete
  40. Abby L, you need to make sure you are starting with 48 stitches. Then *K2 P2* until the end. You should be starting the first 4 rows with K2, it will look like a garter if you start one row K2 and then the next P2. She confused me with the K2tbl, which in Knitting world means K2 together through the back loop, not just Knit 2.

  41. Hi Sabrina - I would like to use this pattern in an "Introduction to Cables" class. We will not sell the pattern, just use it for reference, and we will be sure to attribute to you. Is this ok? thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  42. TRexKnits - sure!

    JUST FOR CLARIFICATION:
k2tbl means KNIT 2 THROUGH BACK LOOP
k2togbl means knit 2 together through back loop

    Hope that makes sense!

  43. How do you add two stitches on three needles?
    Going from 48 to 50.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  44. Where to start with the problems I've had with this pattern. Is there a version for knitting in the flat? For me the k2tbl, p2 rib while increasing 2 stitches evenly around. 50 sts doesnt work for me. I have tried a straight needle pattern I found but it doesnt work out so well either. Completely frustrated.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Zara if you want to knit it flat, it's not hard to do - work on straight needles rather than dpn's, and instead of joining at the first round, just don't.

From there, work every other row as a WS row - it would mean having to read the row backwards, if that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Making it today with only one owl for front of cozy. Love the pattern well written.. thanks

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm not able to find an active lnk for the eyes. Please help.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is a cute pattern but some of the directions are confusing. On the 5th row, it says to continuing k2tbl and p2 while increasing 2 stitches evenly. What kind of increase? M1, yo, etc? I'm confused.

  49. These are so cute. The mascot at the University where my sons attend is an owl. I'm going to be making these for them to use while away at school.
